Couples & proposals
Proposal photography
Proposal photography is a 30-minute service, priced from $200, in which a photographer hides in plain sight, captures the moment one partner asks the other to marry, and then photographs the newly engaged couple. It is a different purchase from a couple session because the person being proposed to must not know it is happening, which means the photographer, the spot, the timing and the cue are all arranged in advance with only one of you.

About this session
A hidden lens, a signal and a plan B

The plan starts with a main spot and a fallback. In Mexico the usual choices are a beach at sunset in Tulum or Los Cabos, a rooftop in Mexico City, a cobbled street in Guanajuato, or the deck of a boat in Isla Mujeres, and every one of them can be crowded, windy or rained out on the day. The photographer arrives first, takes a position that reads as another visitor with a camera, and waits for a signal you choose, so the frames start when you are ready rather than at a minute somebody guessed.
Venues matter. A restaurant, resort, beach club or boat operator decides whether an outside photographer may work on its property, and some charge for it or offer their own proposal setups. We tell you what to ask and when, and the photographer coordinates with the venue’s staff on the day once you have their agreement. If the weather makes the location unusable, the session moves to another date at no charge, and the fallback spot exists so that light rain does not have to stop anything.
After the yes comes a short portrait session, while it is still happening to you, which is where many of the 20 edited photos come from. The gallery is delivered within 5 days, because people want to share the news while it is still news. Proposal photography covers stills only; a filmed proposal is a separate service with its own operator, and an engagement session for save-the-dates is a different booking, usually made months later.
Questions about proposal photography
How does the photographer stay hidden during a proposal shoot?
During a proposal shoot the photographer is in position before you arrive, dressed like any other visitor and working with a long lens from a spot agreed in advance. Proposal photography starts on a signal you give, such as taking off your sunglasses, so there is no fixed minute that a delayed dinner or a slow walk can ruin.
What happens to a proposal photo session if it rains?
A proposal photo session in Mexico is planned with a fallback spot under cover, and light rain is usually workable. If lightning or a storm makes the location unusable, the session moves to a new date at no charge; during the June-to-November hurricane season on the Caribbean coast, an early-evening slot leaves room to wait out a passing storm.
Do we need permission to propose at a restaurant or resort?
For a proposal at a restaurant, resort or private beach club in Mexico, the venue decides whether an outside photographer may work there. Ask the venue before booking proposal photography; many restaurants are glad to seat you at a table the photographer can see, but some resorts limit outside vendors or charge a fee.
Is video included with proposal photography?
Proposal photography covers stills only: 20 edited photos from a 30-minute booking. A filmed proposal is a separate service, proposal video, because one person cannot shoot both well from a hidden position; the two can be booked together for the same moment with two people on site.
