Engagement photos
An engagement session is a 30-minute pre-wedding portrait session, priced from $180, made for couples who are already engaged and need pictures for save-the-dates, invitations and a wedding website. What separates it from a couple session is purpose: each of the 20 edited photos is cropped horizontally and vertically for print and screens, and the location is chosen for what the stationery has to say. An outfit change or a longer session can be added and is quoted in writing before booking.

For couples planning a destination wedding in Mexico, the session often happens on the planning trip, when you fly down to see the venue in Cancún, Riviera Nayarit or Valle de Guadalupe. Doing it then serves two purposes: the save-the-dates show the place your guests are being invited to, and you learn how the light, the heat and the wind behave at that destination before the wedding day. Photographing in a different season from the wedding also gives you a second set of pictures rather than a rehearsal of the same set.
Timing follows the stationery. Save-the-dates for destination weddings go out earlier than for local ones, because guests have to book flights and rooms, so the session is usually six to twelve months before the date. One look suits a 30-minute session, so choose the outfit that matches the tone of the invitation rather than the one you wear every day. If your wedding venue is the location, ask its coordinator in writing whether an outside photographer can work there on a non-event day.
The session is also practice. Couples who have been directed once are easier to photograph on the wedding day, because they already know which side they prefer and how it feels to be asked to walk, stop and look at each other. If there is no wedding being planned, the couple session is the honest choice and costs less; if the wedding has already happened, the honeymoon session is the one to book. The engagement gallery is delivered within 7 days.
Questions about engagement photos
When should we book engagement photos for a wedding in Mexico?
Engagement photos for a destination wedding in Mexico are usually taken six to twelve months before the date, so the pictures are ready for save-the-dates. Many couples combine the engagement session with the planning trip they make to see the venue, which also tests the light and the heat they will meet on the wedding day.
Can our engagement session be at our wedding venue?
An engagement session can take place at your wedding venue if the venue agrees, and photographing it in a different season from the wedding gives you a second set of pictures rather than a preview of the same one. Ask the venue’s coordinator in writing whether an outside photographer is allowed on a non-event day.
What makes engagement photos different from a couple session?
Engagement photos start at the same 30 minutes as a couple session, but every one of the 20 edited photos is delivered in horizontal and vertical crops for printed save-the-dates, a website header and phone screens. A couple session has no wedding behind it and suits a trip or an anniversary.
What should we bring to an engagement session in a hot climate?
For an engagement session in a hot Mexican destination, choose one outfit in breathable fabric that suits both the save-the-date and the location. Pack blotting papers, water and a small fan; keep heels for the photographed spot rather than the walk to it, and ask before booking whether your location allows tripods or props.
