Family photography
Family photography is a 30-minute portrait session for a family group, priced from $180, planned around the people who tire first: toddlers, and grandparents who would rather not walk far on sand. The 20 edited photos cover the whole group, each household within it, children on their own, and the combinations families ask for once everyone is together, such as grandparents with every grandchild, which is the frame that is hardest to get at any other time of year.

Families travelling to Mexico usually book this session during a reunion, a milestone birthday or a holiday that brings three generations to one resort in Los Cabos, Riviera Nayarit or Cozumel. The order of the 30 minutes is fixed in advance because energy is the scarce resource: the full group first, while shirts are clean and children are curious, then households, then small portraits, then free play at the water’s edge, which is where the most natural pictures of children tend to happen.
Timing works around naps and meals rather than around a sunset chart. Early morning, before the beach fills and the heat builds, suits families with small children best; the hour before sunset gives warmer light but runs into dinner and bedtime. Shade matters more than scenery at midday on the coast. Choose two or three colours and let each person wear a different mix of them in light linen or cotton; identical white shirts photograph as a uniform and show every splash.
Resorts and vacation rentals set their own rules for outside photographers, so ask the front desk or the host before booking whether one may work on the property and the beach in front of it. A family session differs from a vacation photoshoot, which is paced for adult travellers of any kind, and from a maternity session, which centres on one person. A longer family session can be added and is quoted in writing before booking. Family galleries are delivered within 7 days, and every branch of the family can download from the same gallery link.
Questions about family photography
What time is best for a family photo session with small children?
A family photo session with small children in Mexico works best early in the morning, when kids are rested and the beach is quiet, or in the hour before sunset if bedtime allows. Family photography at midday is hard work in coastal heat, so midday sessions are moved into shade or kept short.
How many people can a family photography session include?
A family photography session can include a couple with one child or a reunion of three generations; tell us the headcount when booking. With large groups, the 30 minutes go to the full group portrait first, then each household, then grandparents with grandchildren; a longer family session can be added and is quoted in writing before booking.
What should a family wear for photos on a Mexican beach?
For family photos on a Mexican beach, pick two or three colours and let each person wear a different mix of them, in light linen or cotton. Bare feet suit sand better than sandals, a spare set of clothes helps toddlers who reach the waves early, and hats stay off for the portraits so faces are not shaded.
Can the family session happen at our resort or vacation rental?
A family session can take place at a resort or vacation rental if the property allows outside photographers. Some hotels in Mexico restrict or charge for outside vendors, so ask the front desk or the rental host before booking family photography, and check whether the photographer must register at the entrance.
