Photographers in Tulum

Tulum is a town on the Caribbean coast of Quintana Roo where three regimes meet on one stretch of sand: the Zona Arqueológica de Tulum, run by the Instituto Nacional de Antropología e Historia (INAH); the Parque Nacional Tulum around it, run by the Comisión Nacional de Áreas Naturales Protegidas (CONANP); and the federal beach strip that every hotel south of the park faces. Each one sets its own hours and its own position on professional cameras, and a session here is planned around which of the three it falls under.

Tell us your date and destination — we’ll match you with the right photographer. Nothing to pay to ask.

The ruins are the image people arrive with, and the hardest place to make it. INAH opens the site from 8:00 to 17:00 with last entry at 15:30, which rules out both sunrise and sunset in every month of the year. A visitor with a phone needs no permit, but a photographer with professional equipment needs INAH authorisation, trámite INAH-01-001, requested at least 10 business days ahead and charged at MXN 7,958 per day in 2026. The beaches of the national park run on CONANP hours, 7:00 to 19:00, and the hotel-zone sand south of the park is public by federal law at any hour.

Distances decide the rest. The Tulum International Airport sits on Federal Highway 307 near Chunyaxché, roughly 20 km in a straight line southwest of the town, and the ruins entrance is a 700 m walk from the parking lot. The Sian Ka'an Biosphere Reserve begins about 11 km south of the ruins, and Cobá lies 52 km to the northwest, both within an hour by road. A morning session at Sian Ka'an and an evening one on the hotel-zone beach fit the same day.

Clients here are mostly couples from the US and Canada staying four to seven nights: proposals, elopements, honeymoons and weddings at the boutique hotels of the beach road, plus a large share of content creators. Hotels and beach clubs set their own rules for outside photographers, and few publish them, so every session at a private venue starts with an email to the hotel asking for its current vendor policy.

Timing

When to photograph in Tulum

The dry season runs from roughly November to April and brings the clearest skies and the biggest crowds at the ruins. The Atlantic hurricane season runs from 1 June to 30 November, with most activity between mid-August and mid-October. Sargassum arrivals vary from year to year with no official season; the Secretaría de Marina (SEMAR) publishes monitoring bulletins, and CONABIO's SATsum service gives a 10-day drift forecast, so the beach is chosen in the week of the session. INAH's site guide lists the Sea Turtle Festival on 15–17 October, and CONANP lists turtle nesting among the activities of the national park.

Questions about photography in Tulum

Can a photographer shoot a session inside the Tulum ruins?

Yes, with an INAH permit. Phones and personal cameras are allowed at the Zona Arqueológica de Tulum, but a session with professional equipment needs trámite INAH-01-001, requested at least 10 business days ahead, charged at MXN 7,958 per day for photography in 2026 on top of the entry ticket.

Is sunset possible at the Tulum ruins?

No. INAH opens the Zona Arqueológica de Tulum from 8:00 to 17:00, with last entry at 15:30, and the sun sets after 18:00 in Tulum in every month. Sunset sessions in Tulum happen on the hotel-zone beach instead, and sunrise on the beach outside the Parque Nacional Tulum, which opens at 7:00.

How far is the Tulum airport from the hotel zone?

The Tulum International Airport is on Federal Highway 307 near Chunyaxché, roughly 20 km in a straight line southwest of Tulum town and further from the beach road. A morning arrival leaves time for a sunset session in Tulum the same day, and the drive is part of the plan for any proposal timed to arrival.

Do Tulum hotels allow outside photographers?

Each Tulum hotel and beach club sets its own policy, and most do not publish it. Some admit outside photographers freely, some charge a vendor fee, and some allow only their in-house team. The policy is confirmed in writing with the hotel before a session is booked there, never assumed.
