Photographers in Playa del Carmen

Playa del Carmen faces due east across the channel to Cozumel, and that one fact organises every session booked here. The sun rises out of the water — at about 7:19 in late December and 6:08 in late June, on Quintana Roo time, which is UTC−5 all year and an hour ahead of Mexico City. In the evening it sets behind the town and the jungle, so a sunset session on the sand is lit by afterglow rather than by a sun on the horizon. Most couples who want the classic gold-on-water frame book the first hour of the morning, when the beach is also at its emptiest.

The town is long and narrow. Quinta Avenida, the pedestrian Fifth Avenue, runs parallel to the beach one block inland for several kilometres, from the Parque Los Fundadores and the ferry pier at Calle 1 north towards Punta Esmeralda. South of the pier sits Playacar, a gated development of hotels and homes with a quieter, wider beach. North of the centre the hotel blocks thin out into Coco Beach, Punta Esmeralda and the Xcalacoco shore. Everything in the centre is walkable, and a session can move from a beach to the Quinta in five minutes on foot.

The rules are mostly unwritten rather than strict. Mexican beaches are public under the Ley General de Bienes Nacionales, and the Ayuntamiento de Playa del Carmen publishes no fee for a handheld photo session. A ceremony with an arch, chairs or a cordoned-off area is a different matter and can need a ZOFEMAT or SEMARNAT permit, which the hotel or planner arranges. The Xcaret group parks south of town sell their own PhotoPass taken by park photographers, so a session is planned outside them rather than inside.

The clients are mostly couples and families staying in the Playacar resorts or the boutique hotels off the Quinta, plus wedding groups who chose the town over Cancún for its walkable centre. Cancún International Airport is roughly an hour north by road, and the ferries from the pier at Calle 1 make Cozumel a half-day addition rather than a separate trip.

Locations

Popular photography locations in Playa del Carmen

The best hour at each, and what a professional session there needs in the way of a permit — with the issuing authority and the date it was last checked.

  • Playa Punta Esmeralda

The public beach at the north end of the town, where a freshwater spring runs into the sea through a shallow, clear pool. It is the beach locals use rather than the hotel frontage, and at sunrise it is close to empty.

    Best time
Sunrise to about an hour after
    Permit
No municipal fee is published for a handheld session. The beach is public under federal law; a set-up such as an arch, chairs or a closed-off area can need a ZOFEMAT or SEMARNAT permit.

  • Quinta Avenida

The pedestrian Fifth Avenue, one block back from the sea, with painted walls, palapa roofs and side streets that run down to the beach. By late morning it is full of shoppers, so the street frames are made early.

    Best time
Early morning, before the shops open
    Permit
No permit is published by the Ayuntamiento de Playa del Carmen for a handheld session on the pedestrian street. Ask the municipality before shooting with a crew, lights or a set-up.

  • Playacar beach

A wider and quieter beach south of the ferry pier, backed by low resorts and palms. The ferries to Cozumel cross the frame through the morning, which can be part of the picture or something to wait out.

    Best time
Sunrise, or the hour after sunset for afterglow
    Permit
No fee is published for the sand, which is public under federal law. Getting there through the gated Playacar development usually means staying at, or arranging access with, a hotel or residence inside it.

  • Parque Los Fundadores and the Portal Maya

The small seafront square where the Quinta begins, with the bronze Portal Maya sculpture framing the sea. The ferry terminal run by the Administración Portuaria Integral de Quintana Roo (APIQROO) is next door, so the square is busiest at departure times.

    Best time
First light, before the ferry crowds
    Permit
A municipal plaza with no published photo fee. Commercial filming with equipment or a crew should be cleared with the Ayuntamiento de Playa del Carmen first.

  • Xcaret group parks (Xcaret, Xel-Há, Xplor)

The theme parks south of town are a common day out for families staying here. The PhotoPass excludes drone footage, archaeological-site photos and the Xunset show, so a session with us is planned on the beach before or after the park day.

    Best time
Not a location for a booked session
    Permit
In-house photography only, as far as the operator publishes: the parks sell their own PhotoPass from park photographers and self-photo stations, and publish no policy for outside photographers.

Timing

When to photograph in Playa del Carmen

December to April is the drier, cooler stretch and the busiest one, with Christmas, New Year and Easter weeks booking first. The Atlantic hurricane season runs from 1 June to 30 November, and the US National Hurricane Center puts its peak between mid-August and mid-October; a session in those weeks is booked with a weather day held in reserve. Sargassum arrivals on this coast vary from one year to the next with no official season, and SEMAR publishes monitoring bulletins that are worth reading in the fortnight before a beach date. Sunrise moves by more than an hour across the year, from 7:26 in mid-January to 6:08 in late June, and the call time moves with it.

Questions about photography in Playa del Carmen

Is sunrise or sunset better for a beach session in Playa del Carmen?

Sunrise. Playa del Carmen faces east, so the sun comes up out of the Caribbean — at about 7:19 in late December and 6:08 in late June — while at sunset it drops behind the town and the beach is lit only by afterglow. Morning sessions also find the sand far emptier.

Do you need a permit to take photos on the beach in Playa del Carmen?

Not for a handheld session: Mexican beaches are public under the Ley General de Bienes Nacionales, and the Ayuntamiento de Playa del Carmen publishes no fee for one. A ceremony or shoot with an arch, chairs or a cordoned area can need a ZOFEMAT or SEMARNAT permit, which the hotel or planner arranges.

Can we get legally married in Playa del Carmen as foreigners?

Yes. The Registro Civil de Playa del Carmen runs a procedure for foreigners marrying outside its office, trámite MPDC-SG-RC-MEFO-011, with a municipal fee of MXN 8,212 in 2026 (70 UMA) and a stated resolution time of 20 business days, so the paperwork starts well before the trip.

Can our photographer in Playa del Carmen come with us into Xcaret or Xel-Há?

Plan on not. The Xcaret group sells its own PhotoPass, shot by park photographers at Xcaret, Xel-Há, Xplor and its other parks, and publishes no policy for outside photographers, so a Playa del Carmen session is held on the beach or the Quinta Avenida on another morning.
