Couples & proposals

Couple photography

Couple photography is a 30-minute portrait session for two people, priced from $150, that exists for its own sake: an anniversary, a first trip abroad together, a move, or the realisation that every picture of the two of you is a selfie taken at arm’s length. Nothing in it is framed for a save-the-date or a wedding website, which is why it is simpler than an engagement session and why it suits couples who are not planning a wedding at all.

The session is built around one location, or two a few steps apart, so the 30 minutes go on photographs rather than on taxis. In Mexico that might be the malecón in Puerto Vallarta, the painted streets of San Miguel de Allende, a quiet stretch of sand in Holbox, or the colonial centre of Mérida. The photographer gives direction throughout, but most of the 20 edited photos come from walking, talking and reacting rather than from held poses, because almost nobody looks natural when told to stand still.

Light decides more than location. On the Caribbean coast and the Pacific, the last hour before sunset and the first hour after sunrise are the soft windows; midday sun on white sand flattens faces and makes eyes squint. In the highland cities, where the air is drier and the streets are narrow, shade from colonial walls makes late afternoon workable well before the sun goes down. Tell us your hotel and your plans for the day, and the timing plan arrives by message before the session.

Choose this session when the pictures do not have a job to do. If you are engaged and need images for invitations, the engagement session delivers crops built for print and screens. If you have just married, the honeymoon session is planned around a resort stay. If one of you is about to ask the question, the proposal service hides the photographer until the yes. A couple session is the plain version of all of them; a longer session or a second location can be added and is quoted in writing before booking.

Questions about couple photography

What time of day is best for a couple photo session in Mexico?

A couple photo session in Mexico works best in the last hour before sunset or the first hour after sunrise, when the light is low and soft. Midday sun on a beach in Cancún or Los Cabos throws hard shadows under the eyes and makes most people squint, so midday sessions are planned around shade.

What should we wear for couple photos in the heat?

For a couple photo session in a hot, humid Mexican destination, wear breathable linen or cotton in two or three coordinated tones rather than matching outfits. Avoid heavy fabrics, large logos and neon colours; bring a small towel, and plan to change shoes at the beach, where sand and wet rock are slippery.

Can a couple session take place at our resort?

A couple session can usually take place at or near your resort, but some hotels in Mexico restrict or charge for outside photographers on their property. Ask the resort’s concierge before booking whether an outside photographer may work on the grounds and the beach frontage, and whether a fee or registration applies.

How is a couple session different from an engagement session?

A couple session is 30 minutes and 20 edited photos with no wedding behind it: an anniversary, a trip, or simply a first good picture of the two of you. An engagement session starts at the same length but is framed for save-the-dates and a wedding website, with crops made for print.
