Drone photo & video
Drone photo and video in Mexico is an hour-long aerial session flown by a local pilot, priced from $300 for 25 edited aerial photos and a 1-minute aerial film delivered within 7 days. It is the view a ground camera cannot reach: the turquoise band of the reef off Cozumel, the grid of rooftops and domes in Guanajuato, the dunes behind Todos Santos, two people alone on a sandbar in Holbox. Inside the 60 minutes, the time actually spent in the air is set by battery life and by the wind on the day.

About this session
Flying a drone shoot in Mexico, inside the rules

Who flies matters more than which drone. Mexico’s drone standard, NOM-107-SCT3-2019, published in the Diario Oficial de la Federación in November 2019, does not allow foreign operators or foreign-registered drones to fly in Mexico unless a bilateral agreement covers them, and a visitor on tourist status may not do paid work under the Ley de Migración. So every session here is flown by a pilot who lives and works in Mexico, with the drone registered with the Agencia Federal de Aviación Civil (AFAC) whenever it weighs more than 250 g, and with the third-party liability insurance the standard requires for commercial use.
The standard also draws the map of where a shoot can happen. A drone keeps at least 9.2 km from any aerodrome without special authorisation, flies no higher than 122 m, stays within the pilot’s sight, flies only between sunrise and sunset, and keeps a small drone 10 m away from people who are not part of the session. Archaeological zones are a separate matter: the Instituto Nacional de Antropología e Historia (INAH) requires prior authorisation for drones and has banned them outright during peak events such as the Chichén Itzá equinox. Inside federal protected areas, flights generally need authorisation from the Comisión Nacional de Áreas Naturales Protegidas (CONANP), and some turtle-nesting beaches do not allow them at all.
Wind is the one thing no plan controls. A coastal breeze that feels pleasant on the sand can be too strong for a small drone at height, and the pilot decides on the spot whether it is safe to fly. Whether a grounded session moves to another date or changes shape is agreed in writing before booking; if lightning or a hurricane or tropical storm warning makes the location unusable, the terms move the session to a new date at no charge. For a wedding, drone wedding coverage is the add-on built for the day, and for a villa or development, drone real estate footage is planned around the property.
Questions about drone photo & video
Can I bring my own drone, or a drone pilot from home, to film in Mexico?
Mexico’s drone standard, NOM-107-SCT3-2019, does not allow foreign operators or foreign-registered drones to fly in Mexico unless a bilateral agreement covers them, and a visitor on tourist status may not do paid work under the Ley de Migración. That is why every drone photo and video session booked here is flown by a local pilot working in Mexico. If you plan to fly a drone of your own, check with the Agencia Federal de Aviación Civil (AFAC) before you travel.
Where can a drone not fly in Mexico?
Under NOM-107-SCT3-2019 a drone stays at least 9.2 km from any aerodrome without special authorisation, flies no higher than 122 m, only between sunrise and sunset, and always within the pilot’s sight. Drone flights inside archaeological zones need prior authorisation from the Instituto Nacional de Antropología e Historia (INAH), and inside federal protected areas they generally need authorisation from the Comisión Nacional de Áreas Naturales Protegidas (CONANP).
What happens to a drone photo and video session if it is too windy to fly?
Wind and rain can ground a drone on the day even when the sky looks fine from the ground, and the pilot makes that call for safety. Whether a grounded drone session moves to a new date or changes shape is agreed in writing before booking; if lightning or a hurricane or tropical storm warning makes the location unusable, the terms move the session to a new date at no charge.
Can a drone film us on a busy beach in Mexico?
A drone pilot in Mexico may not fly over people who are not part of the shoot, and NOM-107-SCT3-2019 keeps a small drone at least 10 m from them horizontally. On a crowded beach that means filming from the water side, at an early hour, or at a quieter stretch of sand, which is why drone photo and video sessions are usually planned for sunrise.
Can a drone be flown over a cenote?
Cenotes in Mexico are mostly run by private owners or ejidos, and each operator sets its own rules on drones, tripods and professional cameras, sometimes with a separate camera fee. A drone flight over a cenote is planned only after the cenote has confirmed it in writing, so name the cenote when you book and the pilot will check before promising the shot.
