Drone wedding coverage

Drone wedding coverage in Mexico is an add-on to wedding photography or wedding videography in which a separate local pilot flies for 180 minutes of the day, priced from $600 for 40 edited aerial photos and a 2- to 3-minute aerial film delivered within 3 weeks. It does not replace the photographer or the videographer: it adds the shots only height can give, such as the ceremony set against the sea in Los Cabos, the guests walking up a hacienda drive near Mérida, or the couple small on a long white beach in the Riviera Maya.

Adding a drone to a wedding day in Mexico

The 180 minutes are placed with care, because the day has limits the drone cannot argue with. NOM-107-SCT3-2019 allows flights only between sunrise and sunset unless the Agencia Federal de Aviación Civil (AFAC) authorises night flight, so the reception, the first dance under lights and the fireworks are left to the cameras on the ground. The standard also bars flying over people who are not part of the operation, and keeps a small drone at least 10 m from them horizontally, so the ceremony is filmed from the side and from height rather than straight down over the rows of guests.

Location is checked before you book, not on the day. A drone must keep at least 9.2 km from any aerodrome without special authorisation, and some resorts and beach clubs on the Mexican coast sit inside that distance from an airport or airstrip. Venues often add their own conditions on top: where the pilot may take off, whether the drone may fly during the ceremony, and whether an outside drone operator must be registered with the wedding coordinator in advance. A ceremony with a ruin in the background is usually held at a nearby private venue, and any drone flight inside an archaeological zone needs prior authorisation from the Instituto Nacional de Antropología e Historia (INAH).

The pilot is a local operator working in Mexico, because the standard does not allow foreign operators to fly there, and carries the commercial liability insurance it requires. Wind is the open risk: a wedding date cannot move for the weather, and coastal wind can ground a drone on a clear afternoon. What happens to the drone coverage if it cannot fly is written into the agreement before booking. For aerial work on a day without a wedding, drone photo and video is the shorter, stand-alone session.

Questions about drone wedding coverage

Can drone wedding coverage be booked on its own?

Drone wedding coverage is an add-on to wedding photography or wedding videography, not a replacement for either: a separate pilot flies for 180 minutes of the day and delivers 40 aerial photos and a 2- to 3-minute aerial film. The pilot works to the same timeline as the photographer and the videographer, so the three plan the ceremony and the portraits together.

Can the drone film our reception or the fireworks at night?

NOM-107-SCT3-2019 allows drone flights only between sunrise and sunset unless the Agencia Federal de Aviación Civil (AFAC) authorises night flight, so drone wedding coverage ends before dark. The 180 minutes are placed around the ceremony, the arrival of guests and the couple portraits in the last light, and the reception is left to the cameras on the ground.

Will a wedding drone fly over our guests?

A wedding drone in Mexico does not fly over guests, because NOM-107-SCT3-2019 bars flying over people who are not part of the operation and keeps a small drone at least 10 m from them horizontally. The aerial shots of a ceremony are taken from the side and from height, with the drone launched from a spot the venue agrees to and away from the aisle.

Can the drone fly at a resort near the airport?

A drone must keep at least 9.2 km from any aerodrome under NOM-107-SCT3-2019 unless it holds special authorisation, and some resorts and beach venues in Mexico sit inside that ring. The pilot checks the distance from your wedding venue to every airport and airstrip before you book drone wedding coverage, and the venue may add its own drone rules on top.

What if wind grounds the drone on our wedding day?

A wedding date cannot move for the weather, and coastal wind can ground a drone even on a clear afternoon. What happens if the drone wedding coverage cannot fly, including whether any part of it is replaced or repaid, is set out in writing before booking, so the answer is known before the day rather than argued on it.
