Photographers in Isla Mujeres

Isla Mujeres is a small island municipality in Quintana Roo, across Bahía de Mujeres from Cancún. The port profile kept by the Secretaría de Marina (SEMAR) describes it as about five miles long and half a mile wide, low and narrow, with gentle cliffs along the eastern shore. That shape is the reason couples come: Playa Norte at the northern tip faces the sunset over shallow, pale water, and Punta Sur at the southern tip faces the open Caribbean and the sunrise.

Getting here is a ferry, and the timetable is part of the plan. Ultramar runs passenger boats to the island’s APIQROO terminal from Puerto Juárez and from two hotel-zone piers, Playa Tortugas at km 6.5 and Playa Caracol at km 9.5, and asks passengers to arrive 30 minutes before departure. The car ferry leaves from Punta Sam, 7 kilometres north of Puerto Juárez. A couple staying in Cancún checks the last sailing back before choosing a sunset slot. Once on the island, golf carts and taxis cover the whole length in a short drive.

Two federal protected areas shape what is possible offshore. The island’s western coast and the Manchones reef sit inside the Parque Nacional Costa Occidental de Isla Mujeres, Punta Cancún y Punta Nizuc, and Parque Nacional Isla Contoy lies to the north. Both are managed by the Comisión Nacional de Áreas Naturales Protegidas (CONANP), both charge a daily fee, and both management programmes require CONANP authorisation for commercial photography.

Drones are the other constraint. The island has its own aerodrome, and Mexico’s drone standard NOM-107-SCT3-2019 keeps flights 9.2 km from any aerodrome without special authorisation. An island five miles long sits entirely inside that buffer, so aerial work here is not offered.

Locations

Popular photography locations in Isla Mujeres

The best hour at each, and what a professional session there needs in the way of a permit — with the issuing authority and the date it was last checked.

  • Playa Norte

The beach at the northern tip of the island, a short walk from the ferry terminal and the town centre. The water stays shallow a long way out, so a couple can stand knee-deep with the sun going down behind them.

    Best time
The last 45 minutes before sunset
    Permit
No charge to photograph on the public beach, which federal law keeps open to everyone; an arch, chairs or a closed-off area may need a permit from the municipal ZOFEMAT office or SEMARNAT.

  • Punta Sur

The southern tip of the island, where a cliff-top path, a lighthouse and an outdoor sculpture park look east over open sea. It is the island’s sunrise location, and the wind off the Caribbean is noticeably stronger here than on the bay side.

    Best time
    Sunrise
    Permit
Access to the sculpture park at Punta Sur is run by the Municipio de Isla Mujeres; ask the municipality or the gate about the current entry charge and any rule on professional cameras.

  • Arrecife Manchones

A reef off the island’s south-western shore, inside the national park and reached only by licensed boat. The park requires a life vest, forbids touching or feeding wildlife and asks visitors to hire authorised operators.

    Best time
Late morning, with the sun high over the water
    Permit
CONANP charges MXN 125 per person per day for Parque Nacional Costa Occidental de Isla Mujeres, Punta Cancún y Punta Nizuc, and commercial photography inside the park needs CONANP authorisation.

  • Parque Nacional Isla Contoy

A seabird nesting island north of Isla Mujeres, visited on guided trips with marked trails only. The management programme also bans overflights below 500 metres within 2 kilometres of the park, so it is a place to be photographed on the boat rather than a drone location.

    Best time
A full-day boat trip, weather permitting
    Permit
CONANP charges MXN 225 per person per day, the park admits at most 200 visitors a day, and commercial photography there needs CONANP authorisation.

Timing

When to photograph in Isla Mujeres

Rain on the island swings tenfold across the year: SEMAR’s port records give about 50 mm for April and about 556 mm for September, so a session from December to April is the safe bet. September is also the heart of the Atlantic hurricane season, which officially lasts from 1 June to 30 November. Winter has its own catch: the nortes, cold fronts from the north, blow through in November and December, and CONANP notes that January wind often keeps boats from reaching Isla Contoy. Sargassum varies year to year on this coast, so the SEMAR bulletins are worth a look in the weeks before a beach booking.

Questions about photography in Isla Mujeres

How do we get from Cancún to an Isla Mujeres photo session?

Ultramar runs passenger ferries to Isla Mujeres from Puerto Juárez and from two Cancún hotel-zone piers, Playa Tortugas at km 6.5 and Playa Caracol at km 9.5, and asks passengers to arrive 30 minutes before sailing. Check the last return sailing on the operator’s timetable before choosing a sunset session.

Can we fly a drone on Isla Mujeres?

Drone footage is not offered on Isla Mujeres. The island has its own aerodrome, and Mexico’s drone standard NOM-107-SCT3-2019 keeps flights at least 9.2 km from any aerodrome without special authorisation from the AFAC, a buffer that covers an island about five miles long.

Is there a visitor charge on Isla Mujeres?

Yes: the Municipio de Isla Mujeres levies an environmental sanitation charge, the Derecho de Saneamiento Ambiental, equal to 30% of one daily UMA per visitor, collected through boat operators and hotels. Ferry tickets to Isla Mujeres note the municipal charge separately from the fare.

Can a photographer come with us to Isla Contoy?

Only with CONANP’s authorisation: the Isla Contoy management programme requires one for commercial photography, and the park admits no more than 200 visitors a day. Most Isla Mujeres couples are photographed on the island itself and keep the Contoy trip for themselves.
