Photographers in Holbox

Holbox is a sand island off the northern tip of Quintana Roo, and every square metre of it, the village included, lies inside the Área de Protección de Flora y Fauna Yum Balam, a federal protected area run by the Comisión Nacional de Áreas Naturales Protegidas (CONANP). That single fact shapes a session here more than the light does. The area's management programme, published in the Diario Oficial de la Federación in October 2018, bans the use of drones anywhere in Yum Balam except for science and the area's own management, so there is no aerial coverage on Holbox at any price. The same programme requires a CONANP authorisation for commercial filming and photography inside the area, which is why a session is planned as a small, handheld one rather than a production.

Getting here is part of the plan. CONANP puts the port of Chiquilá about 140 km and two hours by road from Cancún, and about 245 km and four and a half hours from Mérida; from Chiquilá the crossing is by boat, and the boats are hired in Chiquilá or on Holbox. Cars stay on the mainland. The programme limits island traffic mainly to light vehicles such as bicycles, tricycles, motorcycles and modified golf carts, and it bans vehicles on the beaches, so the photographer arrives on foot or by cart with a backpack-sized kit.

The light is the reason to come. The village beach faces north onto the Gulf of Mexico. Punta Cocos, the western tip, takes the sunset over the water, and Punta Mosquito, the sandbar east of the village, is a shallow flat where the water stays low far from shore at low tide. Sessions run in the last 90 minutes of daylight or in the first hour after sunrise, when the sand is empty.

Wildlife sets the rest of the rules. Yum Balam's programme keeps visitors 30 m from trees used by nesting birds and 50 m from flamingo colonies, allows bird-watching only by day, and bans flash photography during whale-shark encounters. A photographer who knows those numbers keeps a proposal or a honeymoon session on the right side of the CONANP rangers.

Locations

Popular photography locations in Holbox

The best hour at each, and what a professional session there needs in the way of a permit — with the issuing authority and the date it was last checked.

  • Punta Mosquito

Punta Mosquito is the sandbar east of Holbox village, a 2.5 km turtle-nesting beach that the Yum Balam programme protects as its own preservation subzone. Fires and flashlights on that beach are banned during the turtle-nesting season, and flamingos feeding offshore must be left 50 m clear.

    Best time
Early morning or late afternoon, on a low tide
    Permit
Yum Balam access fee of MXN 225 per person per day; the management programme of the area (Regla 10) requires a CONANP authorisation for commercial photography

  • Playa Norte, Holbox village

Playa Norte is the beach in front of the village, on the island's north shore. The Holbox settlement subzone of Yum Balam bans vehicles on the sand and bans pets on the federal beach strip and the intertidal zone, which keeps the foreground clean.

    Best time
Sunrise, or the hour before sunset
    Permit
Yum Balam access fee of MXN 225 per person per day; no vehicles on the beach and no pets in the federal beach strip

  • Punta Cocos

Punta Cocos is the southwest corner of the island, reached by golf cart or bicycle along the lagoon side. The sun sets straight into the water here for most of the year, with mangrove behind the beach rather than hotels.

    Sunset
    Permit
Yum Balam access fee of MXN 225 per person per day

  • Isla Pájaros, Laguna Yalahau

Isla Pájaros is a bird islet in the lagoon behind Holbox, used by colonies to rest, feed and breed. The Yum Balam programme allows observation only by day, with engines off and no sudden movements, so this is a long-lens stop on a boat tour rather than a portrait location.

    Best time
    Morning, by licensed boat
    Permit
Visited only with a licensed operator; visitors may not step off the boat where there is no dock or bird tower, and must stay 30 m from nesting trees

  • Ojo de agua Yalahau

Yalahau is a freshwater spring on the lagoon shore, visited by boat from Holbox. The CONANP visitor rules ask for a specialised guide and ban sunscreen in the water, so a portrait here is a short stop between the lagoon and the boat.

    Best time
    Late morning
    Permit
CONANP lists it as a Yum Balam attraction; access fee of MXN 225 per person per day, guide required, no sunscreen in the water

Timing

When to photograph in Holbox

Holbox has two calendars. The whale-shark season, set by the federal management programme of the Reserva de la Biosfera Tiburón Ballena, runs from 15 May to 17 September each year, and it fills the island's small hotels. The Atlantic hurricane season runs from 1 June to 30 November, with most activity from mid-August to mid-October. Sargassum arrivals vary year to year, so the Secretaría de Marina (SEMAR) monitoring bulletins are worth checking in the two weeks before a beach session. Holbox keeps Quintana Roo time, UTC−5 all year, one hour ahead of Mérida.

Questions about photography in Holbox

Can we have drone photos on Holbox?

No. The management programme of the Área de Protección de Flora y Fauna Yum Balam, published in the Diario Oficial in 2018, bans drone use throughout the area, which covers all of Holbox, except for science and the area's own management. Holbox sessions are planned without aerial coverage.

How does the photographer get to Holbox?

By road to the port of Chiquilá, about 140 km and two hours from Cancún, then by boat to Holbox; there are no cars on the island. The photographer travels light from Chiquilá and moves around Holbox by golf cart or on foot, so every location is chosen within cart range of the village.

Is there a fee for a photo session on Holbox?

Every visitor to Yum Balam, Holbox included, owes the federal access fee of MXN 225 per person per day in 2026, collected through licensed operators where one is involved. Commercial filming and photography inside the area can also require a CONANP authorisation, so ask the Yum Balam office about it before booking.

What time zone is Holbox in?

Holbox keeps Quintana Roo time, UTC−5 all year with no daylight saving, the same as Cancún and one hour ahead of Mérida and Chichén Itzá. A Holbox sunset session booked from a Mérida itinerary needs that hour added back.
