Photographers in Cozumel

Cozumel is a flat limestone island about 48 km long and 14.8 km wide, some 20 km off the mainland, and it has two coasts that behave like two different places. The west coast faces the channel and Playa del Carmen: it holds San Miguel de Cozumel, the cruise piers, the hotels and the beach clubs, and it is where the sun sets over the water — at about 18:07 in mid-November and 19:30 in late June. The east coast faces the open Caribbean, has almost no buildings, and gets the sunrise, surf and wind. A couple can have a sunset on one side and a sunrise on the other on the same trip, which is the reason to come.

Much of the coast is federal protected area, and that shapes where a session goes. The Parque Nacional Arrecifes de Cozumel covers the beaches and the sea from km 6 of the southern coastal road round to Punta Chiqueros on the east side; the Comisión Nacional de Áreas Naturales Protegidas (CONANP) charges MXN 225 per person per day, requires visitors to stay 1.5 m from the reef, and bans sunscreen in the water. The north of the island and the eastern coastal strip are a separate Área de Protección de Flora y Fauna. Commercial work with a crew inside either area can need CONANP authorisation, and we ask the island CONANP office before promising one.

Cruise days set the rhythm of the town. The Administración Portuaria Integral de Quintana Roo (APIQROO) publishes the arrival calendar for the three cruise terminals — SSA Mexico, Punta Langosta and Puerta Maya — and most ships berth between 6:00 and 7:30 and sail between 16:00 and 17:00. The waterfront and the southern beach clubs are fullest in between, so we schedule sessions for early morning or after the ships have gone.

The parks run by the Fundación de Parques y Museos de Cozumel close early: Punta Sur keeps 9:00 to 17:00 and Chankanaab 8:00 to 16:00, both listed Monday to Saturday. A golden-hour session therefore happens on a public beach rather than inside a park. Ferries from Playa del Carmen, run by Ultramar, Xailing and Winjet, land a few blocks from the centre, and Cozumel International Airport sits on the edge of San Miguel, which also matters for drones.

Locations

Popular photography locations in Cozumel

The best hour at each, and what a professional session there needs in the way of a permit — with the issuing authority and the date it was last checked.

  • Parque Punta Sur and the Celarain Lighthouse

An ecological park of more than 1,000 hectares at the southern tip, with the Celarain Lighthouse, a navigation museum, a scenic tower over lagoons with crocodiles, and empty beaches on reef water. It is open Monday to Saturday only, and golden hour falls after closing.

    Best time
From the 9:00 opening; the park closes at 17:00, before sunset
    Permit
Park admission US$25 for adults and US$17 for children aged 4 to 12. The Fundación de Parques y Museos de Cozumel publishes no policy for professional photo sessions, so a session is cleared with the park first.

  • Playa El Cielo

A shallow sandbar off the south-west coast inside the national park, waist-deep and clear enough to read the sand through. It is a boat stop rather than a beach you can drive to, so the session runs on the boat operator’s timetable.

    Best time
Mid-morning, for the turquoise over white sand
    Permit
CONANP fee of MXN 225 per person per day for Parque Nacional Arrecifes de Cozumel, reached only with CONANP-authorised boats. No sunscreen in the water; commercial work with a crew can need CONANP authorisation.

  • The east coast, Punta Chiqueros to Punta Morena

The undeveloped, windward side of the island, with limestone shelves, surf and a handful of beach restaurants along a single coast road. The sun rises straight out of the open sea, and on a weekday morning there may be nobody else in the frame.

    Best time
    Sunrise
    Permit
No fee is published for these public beaches. The north and east coastal strip is a federal Área de Protección de Flora y Fauna, so commercial work with a crew, and any drone, needs CONANP’s say first.

  • Zona Arqueológica de San Gervasio

The island’s principal Maya settlement, 7 km from downtown across the transversal road, with low temples and white sacbé paths in the forest. It suits a quiet handheld portrait walk far better than a staged shoot.

    Best time
At the 9:00 opening; last entry is 15:00
    Permit
Instituto Nacional de Antropología e Historia (INAH) entry of MXN 210 for foreign visitors. Professional equipment, models or a commercial purpose need INAH permit INAH-01-001, applied for at least 10 business days ahead.

  • Parque Chankanaab

A park on the west coast with a natural inlet, a tropical garden, hammocks and an underwater statue garden for snorkellers. Families use it as a full day out; for photographs it works best in the first hour, before the cruise groups arrive.

    Best time
From the 8:00 opening; the park closes at 16:00
    Permit
Park admission US$31 for adults and US$22 for children aged 4 to 12. No policy for professional photo sessions is published, so the park is asked before booking one there.

Timing

When to photograph in Cozumel

December to April is the driest and busiest stretch, and it overlaps with the heaviest cruise months, so morning sessions book first. The Atlantic hurricane season runs from 1 June to 30 November, peaking from mid-August to mid-October, and cruise calls are cancelled or diverted when a storm is near — the APIQROO calendar marks each call as scheduled, arrived or cancelled. Sargassum arrivals on the Mexican Caribbean change from year to year with no official season; SEMAR publishes bulletins worth checking in the two weeks before a beach date. CONANP rotates rest periods on some reef sites, so a snorkel location planned months ahead is confirmed again the week before.

Questions about photography in Cozumel

Where is the best place on Cozumel for a sunset photo session?

The west coast of Cozumel, which faces the channel and Playa del Carmen, so the sun sets over the water — at about 18:07 in mid-November and 19:30 in late June. Parque Punta Sur and Chankanaab close at 17:00 and 16:00, so a sunset session on Cozumel is held on a public beach rather than in a park.

Do you pay a park fee for a photo session on Cozumel’s beaches?

On the beaches inside Parque Nacional Arrecifes de Cozumel, from km 6 of the southern coastal road to Punta Chiqueros, CONANP charges MXN 225 per person per day, with children under 12 exempt. Commercial work with a crew inside the park can need a separate CONANP authorisation.

Can you fly a drone on Cozumel?

Rarely, and only with a local, Mexican-registered pilot. Cozumel International Airport sits on the edge of San Miguel, and NOM-107-SCT3-2019 keeps drones 9.2 km from an aerodrome, while most of the remaining coast of Cozumel is federal protected area where CONANP authorisation is generally needed.

How do cruise days affect a session on Cozumel?

APIQROO’s calendar for the Cozumel cruise terminals shows most ships berthing between 6:00 and 7:30 and sailing between 16:00 and 17:00. A cruise passenger’s session fits inside that window, and a hotel guest’s session on Cozumel is best placed at dawn or after the ships have left.
