Photographers in Bacalar

Bacalar is a lakeside town in southern Quintana Roo, about 40 km north of Chetumal and roughly 200 km south of Tulum on Federal Highway 307, built on the western shore of the Laguna de Bacalar. The lagoon is fresh water over white limestone, which is what gives it the bands of blue the town is known for, and it is lined with stromatolites, living mineral formations that are damaged by being stood on. Sessions here are planned from docks, kayaks and boats rather than from a beach.

The water has its own rulebook. The Reglas de Operación de la Laguna de Bacalar, issued by the Administración Portuaria Integral de Quintana Roo (APIQROO) and authorised in December 2015, divide the lagoon into zones. Within 100 m of the shore, or 50 m where there are palafitos and docks, boats may not exceed 4 knots or raise a wake. Navigation at Los Rápidos and at the Canal de los Piratas is restricted from 8:00 to 18:00, when swimmers are in the water, and paddling and all tourist services stop between sunset and sunrise.

The light follows the geography. The town faces east across the lagoon, so the sun rises over the water and sets behind the town, leaving the far shore lit in warm light at the end of the day. Midday is when the colour bands are strongest from above, and also when the docks are busiest. The Fuerte de San Felipe, a fort completed in 1733 on the bluff above the lagoon, gives the town its one stone backdrop.

Most clients come down from Tulum or Playa del Carmen for one or two nights: couples, honeymooners and small elopements at the lakeside hotels, many of which have their own docks. Each hotel sets its own rule for outside photographers and its own dock hours, so that is confirmed with the hotel before the date.

  • Bacalar lakeshore and docks (Costera)

The run of wooden docks and palafitos along the town shore, where the lagoon is shallow and pale. The slow zone near the shore keeps the surface flat, and the stromatolites in the shallows are worked around rather than stood on.

    Best time
Sunrise, with the sun coming up over the lagoon
    Permit
No published photo permit for the public shore; private docks and hotels set their own access, and boats within 100 m of shore are limited to 4 knots

  • Fuerte de San Felipe

A star-shaped stone fort completed in 1733 to guard the town against English settlers and pirates, set on the bluff above the lagoon and surrounded by a moat. INAH restored part of the moat wall after the rains of June 2024.

    Best time
Late afternoon, when the walls face the low sun
    Permit
A historic monument owned by the Nation; commercial photography of it needs INAH permission, so ask the museum and the Centro INAH Quintana Roo before a session inside

  • Canal de los Piratas

The channel that links the Laguna de Bacalar south toward Chetumal through the Estero de Chac, with the shallowest and palest water on the lagoon. Swimmers have priority in it during the day.

    Best time
Early morning by boat, before 8:00
    Permit
Reached by boat with a licensed operator; navigation in the channel is restricted from 8:00 to 18:00 except for boats in transit to Chetumal at 4 knots

  • Los Rápidos

The narrow channel between the Laguna de Bacalar and Laguna Xul-Há, north of town, where the water runs with a current over limestone and stromatolites. Visitors float down it rather than swim against it.

    Best time
    Morning, before the day crowds
    Permit
Entry is set by the site operators on the shore; navigation through the channel is restricted from 8:00 to 18:00, when swimmers are in the water

Timing

When to photograph in Bacalar

The dry season runs from roughly November to April, with calm mornings and the clearest water. Storms of the Atlantic hurricane season, 1 June to 30 November, matter here less for wind than for runoff: a few days of heavy rain can turn the shallows milky. Because the lagoon is fresh water inland, it does not receive the sargassum that reaches the Caribbean beaches, which makes Bacalar a fallback for couples whose coastal session dates coincide with a heavy arrival. Weekends and Mexican holidays fill the public docks.

Questions about photography in Bacalar

Can we stand on the stromatolites for photos in Bacalar?

No. The stromatolites along the Bacalar shore are living mineral formations, built up by microbes over a very long time, that break under a foot, a knee or a paddle. Sessions on the Laguna de Bacalar are shot from docks, kayaks and sandy patches next to the formations, and the formations stay in the frame rather than under anyone.

Is there sargassum in Bacalar?

No. Bacalar sits on a freshwater lagoon inland from the Caribbean coast, so the sargassum seaweed that reaches the beaches of Tulum and the rest of the Mexican Caribbean does not arrive here. Rain is the variable instead: heavy storms in the June-to-November hurricane season can cloud the lagoon for days.

How far is Bacalar from Tulum and Chetumal?

Bacalar is about 40 km north of Chetumal and roughly 200 km south of Tulum on Federal Highway 307, a drive of about two and a half to three hours from Tulum. Most couples staying on the Tulum coast give Bacalar one or two nights rather than a day trip, so the session can be timed for sunrise.
