Family photos in Los Cabos: beaches, El Arco and the sunset hour by month
Where to take family photos in Los Cabos: the swimmable Sea of Cortez beaches versus the Pacific side, the El Arco park fee, the sunset time for every month, whale season and our family sessions.

A family photo session in Los Cabos is 30 minutes on a beach between Cabo San Lucas and San José del Cabo, timed for the soft light before sunset, on sand where small children can safely get their feet wet. The last part matters more here than on most Mexican coasts, because Los Cabos has two very different seas: the sheltered Sea of Cortez along the tourist corridor, and the open Pacific on the far side of Land's End.
Two seas, and why it matters with children
The Los Cabos Tourism Board's official beach guide lists 31 beaches it calls swimmable across the region. Most sit on the Sea of Cortez side, from El Médano in Cabo San Lucas through Santa María and El Chileno to Palmilla near San José del Cabo. Two famous beaches are absent from that list: Playa del Amor, on the bay side of the El Arco rocks, and Playa del Divorcio, which faces the Pacific behind it. Families come for the view, not the water.
The same guide counts 25 Blue Flag beaches in Los Cabos, and says those beaches have restrooms, bins, lifeguards, information points and wheelchair ramps. It names 5 of them Platinum beaches: Chileno, Santa María, Acapulquito, Las Viudas and Palmilla. Conditions still change by the day, so we check the lifeguard flag when we arrive and move along the coast if it is red.

| Santa María | Sea of Cortez | Yes, Platinum | Controlled / free | A sheltered cove for toddlers |
| El Chileno | Sea of Cortez | Yes, Platinum | Free | Calm water and rock formations |
| Palmilla | Sea of Cortez | Yes, Platinum | Controlled / free | Near San José del Cabo hotels |
| Playa del Amor | Bay and Pacific | Not listed | By boat | A short stop with El Arco behind |

El Arco and the protected area fee
El Arco and the rocks of Land's End sit inside the Área de Protección de Flora y Fauna Cabo San Lucas, managed by the Comisión Nacional de Áreas Naturales Protegidas (CONANP). CONANP lists an access fee of MXN 125 per person per day for the area, set in Article 198 of the Ley Federal de Derechos, and children under 12 are exempt. Licensed boat operators collect the fee, so it is usually part of a water-taxi or tour price. Most families photograph El Arco from the beach at El Médano or from a boat, which is the easier plan with small children than a landing at Playa del Amor.
The sunset hour, month by month
Baja California Sur runs on Zona Pacífico time, UTC−7, all year, under the Ley de los Husos Horarios; it is one hour behind Mexico City. The US Naval Observatory gives these times for Cabo San Lucas on the 15th of each month of 2026. We start a 30-minute family session about 45 minutes before sunset, which keeps the light warm and ends well before children get tired.
| Month | Sunset | Suggested start |
|---|---|---|
| January | 17:56 | about 16:55 |
| February | 18:16 | about 17:15 |
| March | 18:29 | about 17:30 |
| April | 18:40 | about 17:40 |
| May | 18:53 | about 17:55 |
| June | 19:06 | about 18:05 |
| July | 19:08 | about 18:10 |
| August | 18:52 | about 17:50 |
| September | 18:23 | about 17:25 |
| October | 17:54 | about 16:55 |
| November | 17:35 | about 16:35 |
| December | 17:37 | about 16:35 |
A sunrise session is the alternative for families with early risers; mid-June sunrise is at 05:34 and mid-December at 06:53, and the east-facing corridor beaches get the first light.
Whale season
Whale-watching seasons in Mexico are set each year by the Secretaría de Medio Ambiente y Recursos Naturales (SEMARNAT) in the Diario Oficial de la Federación. The 2025–2026 notice ran the Los Cabos season from 15 December 2025 to 30 April 2026, and the 2026–2027 notice had not been published by late October 2026. The whale-watching standard NOM-131-SEMARNAT-2010 allows at most 4 boats per whale or group, for at most 30 minutes, and bans swimming with the whales. A family photo on a licensed whale-watching boat is possible, but the boat's priority is the rules and the animals, so treat it as a bonus rather than the session.
Heat, storms and the calmest months
The eastern Pacific hurricane season runs from 15 May to 30 November, according to the US National Hurricane Center, with a smaller peak in late August. From July to September the late-afternoon heat is the bigger problem for children, which is why we pick the latest start the light allows. December to April brings cooler evenings and whale season together, and it is when most families book.
Permits on the beach
The Los Cabos municipality says event permits are handled in person at the Dirección Municipal de Gobierno in San José del Cabo, according to its trámites page. No rule or fee for a family photo session is published there. A family and a photographer with a handheld camera do not stage an event; a set-up with chairs, a picnic arrangement or a closed-off area is the case to ask the municipality about first.
Drones
An aerial family photo over the corridor is possible when flown by a Mexican-registered, insured pilot under NOM-107-SCT3-2019, which requires 9.2 km from any aerodrome unless authorised. Both Cabo San Lucas and San José del Cabo have airfields, so the pilot checks the location before you book. Our drone guide covers the rest.
Sessions for families
| Session | Starts at | Length | Edited photos | Delivery |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Family photos | $180 | 30 minutes | 20 | 7 days |
| Maternity photos | $170 | 30 minutes | 20 | 7 days |
A maternity session works best at Santa María or El Chileno, where the sheltered water allows a dress at the waterline without a wave arriving mid-frame. Grandparents and cousins can join a family session; tell us the group size when you book so we choose a beach with room for everyone, and a longer session or more photos for a large group are quoted in writing before booking. Our page on family photos in Los Cabos has the local detail. If your trip includes Todos Santos, see our Todos Santos page for the Pacific-side option.
