The session happens before service or on a closed day. That is the only way the kitchen can plate one dish at a time for the camera and the photographer can move a table to the window, where most food is photographed. The dish list and the shooting order are agreed with the chef in advance, so plates arrive fresh: anything that wilts, melts or foams goes first, braises and rice dishes later. Hero dishes are photographed from more than one angle, and the remaining time covers drinks, hands at work in the kitchen, the team and the room.

Thirty finished photographs sounds small next to a full menu, and it is deliberately so. A restaurant usually needs strong images of the dishes that sell, not a catalogue of every plate, and a 3-hour session spent on fewer dishes produces pictures that hold up on a printed menu as well as a phone. Files come in square, vertical and horizontal crops; each delivery app publishes its own image rules, so check them before the day.

The chef plates as for a guest, and the photographer adjusts angle, garnish and light. A separate food stylist is worth adding for packaged products, cookbooks or advertising, and is quoted on its own. For a whole hotel with several outlets, hotel photography covers the property; for short video of the kitchen for social channels, the social content service adds clips.

Questions about restaurant & food photography

When is the right time for restaurant food photography?

Restaurant food photography works before service or on a closed day, when the kitchen can plate one dish at a time for the camera and the dining room is empty. A 3-hour food photography session in a busy restaurant during service gives rushed plates, staff in the background and no space to place a table by the window.

How many dishes fit in a 3-hour food photography session?

A 3-hour food photography session covers roughly the dishes that make up 30 finished photographs: hero dishes photographed from more than one angle, drinks, a few kitchen and team shots and the dining room. Send the dish list in advance and plate the dishes in the order the chef and photographer agree, so each arrives fresh.

Can food photography be used on delivery apps in Mexico?

Food photography for a restaurant in Mexico is delivered in square, vertical and horizontal crops, so the same session can fill the printed menu, a website, Instagram and the delivery apps. Each delivery app sets its own image rules, so check its current requirements before the session and tell the photographer which app matters most.

Do we need a food stylist for restaurant photography?

Restaurant food photography usually does not need a separate food stylist: the chef plates as for a guest, and the photographer adjusts angles, garnish and light on the table. A stylist is worth adding for packaged food, a cookbook or advertising, where every crumb is placed on purpose, and that is quoted separately from the restaurant session.
