Photographers in Guadalajara

Guadalajara is the capital of the state of Jalisco and the home city of mariachi, which UNESCO inscribed as intangible cultural heritage in 2011. For photography it offers three settings in one trip. The Centro Histórico gives cathedral spires, arcaded plazas and the Hospicio Cabañas, a World Heritage site since 1997 whose chapel holds the murals of José Clemente Orozco. The western neighbourhoods around Avenida Chapultepec, Colonia Americana and Providencia give tree-lined streets and modern architecture. And the blue agave fields of Tequila, a separate UNESCO landscape of 34,658 ha, lie north-west of the city.

The rules are state law, which is unusual. Jalisco’s Ley de Filmaciones covers photography as well as film, and it is what decides whether a session needs paperwork. Tourist or personal-use photography on public streets that blocks no main road needs no notice or permit. A permit becomes necessary once camera, sound, lighting or grip equipment is set up on the street, or production vehicles block traffic, and private property is exempt as long as the vehicles are parked legally.

Distances are bigger than in a colonial town. The Centro, Chapultepec and San Pedro Tlaquepaque are each a short drive apart, but the international airport is south of the city and the drive to Tequila takes most of a morning there and back, so a session that combines places is planned around the traffic. The light is the other planning question: from June to September afternoon storms are frequent, while the dry spring brings the hottest days of the year.

Clients here are as often Mexican as foreign. Quinceañeras, church weddings and engagement sessions make up much of the work, alongside couples and families visiting from the United States, and companies attending events at the city’s convention centres.

  • Hospicio Cabañas (Museo Cabañas)

A 19th-century hospice for orphans and the elderly, now a museum and a UNESCO World Heritage site, with arcaded courtyards and Orozco’s murals in the chapel. The museum opens Tuesday to Sunday from 10 am to 5 pm. The arcaded courtyards are the frame; the murals are for looking at.

    Best time
Tuesday to Sunday, from the 10 am opening
    Permit
Museum entry applies. No photo-session rate is published, so ask the museum for authorisation before planning a session with professional equipment.

  • Catedral, Plaza de Armas and Plaza Liberación

    Best time
Early morning, or blue hour with the cathedral lit
    Permit
No notice or permit for tourist or personal photography that blocks no traffic. Setting lights, sound or grip equipment on the street needs a state filming permit.

  • Andador Independencia, San Pedro Tlaquepaque

The pedestrian main street of Tlaquepaque, a separate municipality next to Guadalajara, lined with colourful façades, galleries and crafts shops. Hanging decorations often cover the street. The square of El Parián is a few steps away.

    Best time
    Weekday mornings
    Permit
The same state rule: handheld photography that blocks nothing needs no permit, while equipment set up on the street needs a filming permit.

  • Avenida Chapultepec and Colonia Americana

A tree-lined avenue with a pedestrian median and the early 20th-century houses of Colonia Americana around it. Cafés, murals and mansions give a modern, urban look. The area is lively at night.

    Best time
Late afternoon in the dry season
    Permit
No notice or permit for personal photography that leaves the pavement and traffic free. A session that parks vans across the street or sets up lights needs a state filming permit.

  • Agave fields of Tequila

Blue agave in rows across the UNESCO Agave Landscape, between the Tequila Volcano and the Río Grande de Santiago valley. The fields are farmland, not a park. Tequila town, with its distilleries, sits in the middle.

    Permit

Questions about photography in Guadalajara

Do I need a permit for a photo session in Guadalajara?

In Guadalajara the rule is Jalisco’s Ley de Filmaciones: tourist or personal photography on public streets that blocks no main road needs no notice or permit. Setting up lighting, sound or grip equipment on the street, or blocking traffic with vehicles, needs a state filming permit, and museums and churches set their own rules.

When is the rainy season in Guadalajara?

Guadalajara’s rainy season runs from June to September, when each month averages 145 to 213 mm at the Servicio Meteorológico Nacional observatory and July is the wettest. March and April average about 4 mm, so spring is the driest time for an outdoor session.

Can we take photos inside the Hospicio Cabañas in Guadalajara?

The Hospicio Cabañas in Guadalajara is the Museo Cabañas, open Tuesday to Sunday from 10 am to 5 pm, and it publishes no rate for photo sessions. Ask the museum for authorisation before planning a session with professional equipment in the courtyards.

How far is Tequila from Guadalajara for a photo session?

Tequila lies north-west of Guadalajara, so a session in the agave fields takes most of a morning or afternoon including the drive. The fields are privately owned farmland inside the UNESCO Agave Landscape, so access is arranged with a grower or a distillery.
