Guanajuato

Photographers in Guanajuato

Guanajuato is a colonial silver-mining city built into a narrow ravine at about 2,000 m, and its shape decides every session. Houses painted ochre, pink and blue climb the slopes on both sides, the old riverbed runs underground as a road tunnel, and most of the centre is reached on foot through callejones too narrow for a car. A photographer here works in short walks between plazas, with the colour on the hillsides as the backdrop and the stairways doing the posing.

The light is a ravine’s light. The callejones fall into shade early, so the centre is photographed in open plazas such as the Jardín de la Unión and the Plaza de la Paz in the morning, and from the hillside viewpoints in the last hour, when the whole bowl of houses turns warm. The Monumento al Pípila viewpoint is reached by the funicular that starts behind the Teatro Juárez, or by a steep stair climb of about 15 minutes.

Rules here are municipal rather than federal for most of the city. The Reglamento de Espectáculos y Festejos Públicos treats a callejoneada, the walking serenade led by an estudiantina, and any group of musicians performing in the street as a public show that needs a permit from the Dirección de Fiscalización y Control de Reglamentos. Museums are the exception: the Alhóndiga de Granaditas is an INAH museum, where professional cameras need INAH authorisation.

The Aeropuerto Internacional de Guanajuato in Silao is about 30 km away, and San Miguel de Allende is a natural second stop roughly 90 minutes east. Clients are couples on a Bajío road trip, destination weddings with a callejoneada as the second act, and Mexican families who come for the Festival Internacional Cervantino every October.

Locations

Popular photography locations in Guanajuato

The best hour at each, and what a professional session there needs in the way of a permit — with the issuing authority and the date it was last checked.

  • Callejón del Beso

The Callejón del Beso is the narrow alley whose balconies almost touch, the setting of Guanajuato’s best-known love legend. It is barely wider than two people, so a session here is one or two frames in a quiet moment rather than a long sitting. The alley is in shade most of the day, which keeps skin tones even.

    Best time
Weekday mornings before 10:00, before the tour groups
    Permit
No municipal photo-session permit is published; a handheld session that keeps the alley passable is ordinary use of the street, while musicians and callejoneadas need a municipal permit

  • Mirador del Monumento al Pípila

The viewpoint at the foot of the Monumento al Pípila looks across the whole ravine: the Basílica, the university and the painted hillside houses in one frame. It is the city’s classic wide portrait, and it gets busy at sunset, so a photographer arrives early to hold a corner of the railing. The funicular from behind the Teatro Juárez takes a couple of minutes.

    Best time
The last hour before sunset, all year
    Permit
No municipal photo-session permit is published for the public viewpoint; the funicular and the stairway are the only costs of getting there

  • Teatro Juárez steps and Jardín de la Unión

The Teatro Juárez is the columned theatre with bronze muses along its roofline, facing the triangular Jardín de la Unión under clipped Indian laurels. The steps are Guanajuato’s public grandstand, so they are full by late morning. During the Cervantino the theatre is a festival venue and the steps fill with queues.

    Best time
Early morning, when the steps are empty and the laurels are in soft light
    Permit
No municipal photo-session permit is published for the plaza and the exterior steps; photographing inside the theatre is a question for the theatre itself

  • Museo Regional de Guanajuato Alhóndiga de Granaditas

The Alhóndiga de Granaditas is the fortress-like granary where an early battle of the War of Independence was fought in 1810, now the Museo Regional de Guanajuato run by the Instituto Nacional de Antropología e Historia (INAH). The massive stone facade photographs well from the street. Inside, phones for personal use are fine, and professional cameras need INAH authorisation.

    Best time
Outside, in morning light on the stone facade
    Permit
INAH permit INAH-01-001 for professional equipment inside the museum, applied at least 10 business days ahead, at MXN 7,958 per day for photography

Timing

When to photograph in Guanajuato

The dry months from November to May give Guanajuato its clearest skies, with cold mornings in December and January and the warmest, dustiest light in April and May. The summer rains, roughly June to September, bring afternoon storms that send water down the callejones, so sessions move to the morning. The Festival Internacional Cervantino fills the city every October; the 54th edition ran from 3 to 18 October 2026, with free stages on the Explanada de la Alhóndiga and in the main plazas.

Questions about photography in Guanajuato

Do you need a permit for a photo session in the streets of Guanajuato?

The Municipio de Guanajuato publishes no permit for a handheld photo session in its streets and plazas. Its Reglamento de Espectáculos y Festejos Públicos does require a municipal permit for callejoneadas and for musicians performing in the street, and the INAH museum in the Alhóndiga de Granaditas requires authorisation for professional cameras.

Can a callejoneada be part of a session or a wedding in Guanajuato?

Yes, with a municipal permit. Guanajuato’s Reglamento de Espectáculos y Festejos Públicos treats a callejoneada as a public show: it needs a permit from the Dirección de Fiscalización y Control de Reglamentos, requested at least two days ahead, runs on Fridays, Saturdays and holidays from 20:00 to 23:00, and takes at most 75 people.

When is the Festival Internacional Cervantino in Guanajuato?

The Festival Internacional Cervantino is held in Guanajuato every October; the 54th edition ran from 3 to 18 October 2026, according to the festival’s official programme. Hotels fill and the main plazas host stages for those two weeks, so a session in Guanajuato during the Cervantino is planned around the published agenda.

How far is Guanajuato from the airport?

Guanajuato is about 30 km from the Aeropuerto Internacional de Guanajuato in Silao, usually under an hour by road, and San Miguel de Allende is roughly 90 minutes east. Couples often combine a session in Guanajuato’s callejones with a second session in San Miguel de Allende on the same trip.
