Vow renewal photography
Vow renewal photography in Mexico is two hours of coverage for a married couple restating their vows, priced from $450 for 80 edited photographs delivered within 10 days. The ceremony is symbolic and has no legal effect, so the Registro Civil plays no part and no documents are needed. That is the first thing that sets it apart from a wedding: there is nothing to prepare except the place, the hour and the people who will stand with you.

Renewing vows in Mexico, with the family in the frame

The second difference is who is in the photographs. A vow renewal is often planned around an anniversary trip with children or grandchildren, and the family groups matter as much as the couple portraits. The session puts the groups straight after the ceremony, while small children are still dressed and patient, and leaves the last part of the two hours for the two of you in the evening light. A group list agreed by name in advance keeps it to minutes rather than a long negotiation on the sand.
Vow renewals are often held at a resort in Cancún, Puerto Vallarta, Los Cabos or the Riviera Nayarit, on the hotel’s beach or a garden terrace. Some resorts sell a renewal package that includes their own photographer; others allow an outside vow renewal photographer under their own conditions. Ask the resort whether an outside-vendor fee applies, how many days ahead the photographer must be registered, and whether the ceremony spot is yours for the whole two hours or only for the ceremony itself.
If you are not yet married, the wedding or elopement page is the one to read. If the renewal is the two of you only, with no family and no celebrant, a couple session may cover it for less. And if what you want is the dress in the sea, a trash the dress session is the one designed for water.
Questions about vow renewal photography
How is vow renewal photography different from wedding photography?
Vow renewal photography covers a couple who is already married, so there is no legal paperwork, no getting-ready sequence and usually no reception: 2 hours for the ceremony, family groups with children or grandchildren, and couple portraits. A full wedding day needs 8 hours of coverage; a vow renewal rarely needs more than two.
Do you need any paperwork for a vow renewal in Mexico?
A vow renewal in Mexico is a symbolic ceremony with no legal effect, so the Registro Civil is not involved and no documents are required. A celebrant, a friend or a resort coordinator can lead it, and the only arrangements to make are with the venue: where the ceremony happens, at what time, and whether the vow renewal photographer must be registered.
Can our children and family be in the vow renewal photos?
Family is often the point of vow renewal photography: children walking the couple in, a grandchild carrying the rings, and groups across three generations. Agree the group list by name before the day, and put the groups straight after the ceremony while young children are still dressed and patient.
Can we renew our vows at our resort in Mexico with an outside photographer?
Some Mexican resorts sell a vow renewal package that includes their own photographer, and some allow an outside vow renewal photographer instead. Ask the resort whether an outside-vendor fee applies, what registration it needs and how many days ahead, and whether the ceremony spot is booked for the whole 2 hours or only for the ceremony itself.
