Day of the Dead photoshoot
A Day of the Dead photoshoot is a 30-minute portrait session held between October 31 and November 2, priced from $200, usually with catrina or catrín face painting. Día de Muertos is a family remembrance, not a costume party: households build ofrendas with marigolds, candles, food and photographs of their dead, and in many places families spend the night in cemeteries beside their graves. UNESCO inscribed the indigenous festivity dedicated to the dead on its Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity in 2008.

The face painting is not included. Book a makeup artist separately, ask how long the design takes, and set the session to begin after the paint has dried; a session that starts while the artist is still working loses its light. The figure itself comes from José Guadalupe Posada’s early twentieth-century etching of an elegant skeleton, later named La Catrina by Diego Rivera in his 1947 mural in Mexico City. Wearing it respectfully means treating the season as a remembrance, not a backdrop for a theme.
Cemeteries and family altars belong to the families who tend them. A Day of the Dead photoshoot does not pose at graves or at someone else’s ofrenda, and photographs mourners only with clear permission. Rules for visitors differ by municipality and by cemetery, so ask the cemetery administration before going. The session works instead in public streets, plazas and community displays, which in Oaxaca, Mexico City, San Miguel de Allende and Mérida, where the Yucatec Maya observance is called Hanal Pixán, fill with marigolds and papel picado.
November 1 is traditionally given to children who have died and November 2 to adults, and many towns hold their largest public displays across those days. Demand for photographers and makeup artists peaks then, so book early. Including a photograph of someone you remember, or an object that was theirs, turns the session into something closer to the meaning of the day. The 20 edited photos are delivered within 7 days.
Questions about Day of the Dead photoshoot
Is face painting included in the Day of the Dead photoshoot?
Face painting is not included in the Day of the Dead photoshoot: the 30-minute session and 20 edited photos cover photography only. Book a makeup artist for the catrina or catrín face separately, ask how long the design takes, and set the session start for after the paint has dried.
Can a Day of the Dead photoshoot take place in a cemetery?
Cemeteries during Día de Muertos are places where families keep vigil for their dead, so a Day of the Dead photoshoot does not use graves or family altars as a backdrop. Cemetery rules vary by municipality and by cemetery; ask the administration before going, and photograph mourners only with their clear permission.
Is wearing catrina makeup for a photoshoot respectful?
Catrina makeup is widely worn in Mexico during Día de Muertos, and a Day of the Dead photoshoot can be respectful when it treats the season as a remembrance rather than a costume party. Keep the session in public streets and plazas, do not pose at someone’s ofrenda, and consider including a photo of a person you remember.
Which dates does a Day of the Dead photoshoot cover?
A Day of the Dead photoshoot is booked between October 31 and November 2, when marigolds, papel picado and public ofrendas fill towns such as Oaxaca, Mexico City and San Miguel de Allende. Demand for photographers and makeup artists peaks on those 3 days, so book the Day of the Dead session early.
