Photographers in Mazatlán

Mazatlán is a working Pacific port in Sinaloa whose Centro Histórico, beachfront promenade and island beaches sit within a few kilometres of each other, so one session can move from nineteenth-century streets to open surf in a short taxi ride. The Teatro Ángela Peralta, built in the Porfirian era and declared a Patrimonio Histórico de la Nación in 1990, anchors the old town around the Plazuela Machado. South of it, Paseo Olas Altas runs along the original seafront, and the promenade continues north past the Zona Dorada hotel strip toward Playa Cerritos.

The coast faces west and south-west, which is what sells the city to photographers: the sun goes down over the water from almost every beach. Sinaloa sits in the Zona Pacífico of the Ley de los Husos Horarios at UTC−7 with no daylight saving, so a June sunset falls close to 6:55pm and a December sunset close to 5:25pm. Families flying in from US Central time often expect a later evening, and the session is set by the sun rather than by dinner.

Across the harbour channel, Isla de la Piedra (Stone Island) is a long beach reached by water taxi from the Playa Sur docks, and it gives a quieter frame than the city beaches. El Faro, the lighthouse on Cerro del Crestón at the harbour mouth, is a steep, unshaded climb best made in the early morning. The Aeropuerto Internacional de Mazatlán lies south-east of the city, and the Centro Histórico, Olas Altas and Isla de la Piedra all fall inside the band where the national drone standard caps flights at 100 metres.

Clients here are a mix of visitors from the US and Canada, most of them in the dry winter months, and Mexican families celebrating weddings, quinceañeras and reunions. Carnaval in February is the one week the whole city reorganises itself around.

  • Paseo Olas Altas

The original seafront of the old port, with pastel façades on one side and the open Pacific on the other. It is a Carnaval parade venue, so expect crowds and street closures in Carnaval week.

    Permit
Public seafront and beach under the Ley General de Bienes Nacionales. A set-up such as an arch, chairs or a closed-off area may need a permit from the ZOFEMAT office or SEMARNAT, so ask before the date.

  • Teatro Ángela Peralta and Plazuela Machado

A Porfirian-era theatre, declared a Patrimonio Histórico de la Nación in 1990, facing the arcaded Plazuela Machado. The surrounding blocks of the Centro Histórico give colour, iron balconies and shade at midday.

Timing

When to photograph in Mazatlán

November to May is the dry season and the main photography season, with clear sunsets and calm evenings. The Carnaval Internacional de Mazatlán, organised by the municipal culture institute, runs from 4 to 9 February 2027, with the big parades on 7 and 9 February along the seafront, so Olas Altas is packed on those evenings and hotels fill early. Summer is hot and humid, with rain mostly from July to September. The eastern Pacific hurricane season runs from 15 May to 30 November, and a September or October booking needs a flexible backup date.

Questions about photography in Mazatlán

What time is sunset in Mazatlán?

Sunset in Mazatlán falls near 5:25pm in December and near 6:55pm in late June, because Sinaloa keeps UTC−7 all year with no daylight saving under the Ley de los Husos Horarios. Visitors used to a summer clock change are often an hour early or late for a sunset session.

When is Carnaval in Mazatlán in 2027?

The Carnaval Internacional de Mazatlán runs from 4 to 9 February 2027, with the main parades on Sunday 7 and Tuesday 9 February, according to the municipal Instituto de Cultura, Turismo y Arte. Paseo Olas Altas is a parade venue, so seafront sessions move to other beaches on those evenings.

Is hurricane season a problem for a Mazatlán session?

The eastern Pacific hurricane season runs from 15 May to 30 November, and Mazatlán is on that coast. Most sessions go ahead normally, but a Mazatlán booking in September or October should carry a backup date, and the dry months from November to May are the safer choice for a wedding.

Can a drone be flown over the Centro Histórico of Mazatlán?

The Centro Histórico of Mazatlán lies between 9.2 and 18.5 km from the city’s listed airport, where NOM-107-SCT3-2019 caps drone height at 100 metres. Flights there are possible for a Mexican-registered, insured pilot who also keeps 10 metres from people who are not part of the shoot.
